Do You Really Need a VPN in 2025? (Debunking the Myths)

By Alex Mercer Updated: October 2025 5 Min Read

If you watch YouTube, you’ve probably heard an influencer scream: "You need a VPN or hackers will steal your bank passwords instantly!"

Is that true? Or is it just marketing hype?

In 2025, the answer isn't a simple "Yes." It depends entirely on where you use your computer and what you are trying to hide.

Myth 1: "I need a VPN for banking security."

The Myth: If I don't use a VPN, people can read my credit card number when I shop on Amazon.
The Reality: This is mostly false in 2025. Almost every modern website uses HTTPS (look for the lock icon in your browser). HTTPS encrypts your data between your computer and the website. Even if a hacker intercepts your Wi-Fi, they just see scrambled code.

So... When DO you need one?

While HTTPS protects your data, it does not protect your identity. Here are the 3 reasons you actually need a VPN:

1. Stopping ISP Tracking (Privacy)

Without a VPN, your Internet Service Provider (Comcast, AT&T, Verizon) can see every website you visit. In the US, they are legally allowed to sell this browsing history to advertisers.

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel. Your ISP sees that you are connected to the tunnel, but they cannot see what is inside it. If you believe your browsing history is nobody's business, you need a VPN.

2. Public Wi-Fi Risks

HTTPS is great, but not perfect. On public networks (Airports, Coffee Shops), hackers can use "Packet Sniffing" to see which websites you are visiting, even if they can't see the passwords.

More dangerously, they can create "Fake Wi-Fi Twins" (e.g., naming their hotspot "Starbucks_Free"). If you connect to that, they can redirect you to fake banking sites. A VPN prevents this redirection.

3. "Digital Borders" (Travel)

If you travel abroad, you will find that many of your home services (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Online Banking) are blocked. A VPN allows you to "teleport" your digital location back to your home country so your apps keep working.

Don't Buy a Standalone VPN. Bundle It.

Five years ago, you had to buy an Antivirus ($40) and a separate VPN ($80). That is a waste of money.

In 2025, the top security suites include Unlimited VPNs for free in their premium plans.

Comparison: Bundle vs Separate

Product Annual Cost What you get
ExpressVPN (Standalone) ~$100/yr Just a VPN.
TotalShield 360 (Bundle) ~$39/yr VPN + Antivirus + ID Theft Protection.

Verdict: Do you need it?

Recommendation: Don't pay extra. Get a security suite like TotalShield or Norton 360 that includes the VPN for free.
